ANA PRETA
Mulher, negra e pobre, no interior do Brasil do século XIX, acompanha o marido soldado à guerra do Paraguai, a pé, por mil quilômetros. Ana luta bravamente, encorajando os soldados, cuidando de suas feridas, ou pegando em armas. Quando seu marido falece, na “Retirada da Laguna”, decide carregar o seu corpo nos braços para ser enterrado no Brasil. Mesmo na situação de miséria e fome a que estavam sujeitos, Ana não desiste e, ao ver um tenente ferido sendo abandonado para morrer, decide carregá-lo também. Assim, anda com o corpo do marido por uns quatrocentos metros, deposita-o no solo e volta, buscando o tenente ferido, perfazendo o trajeto três vezes. Sepulta seu esposo no solo brasileiro, quando já não tem mais forças para continuar.

Woman, black and poor, inner Brazil of the XIX century, follows your soldier husband to the war in Paraguay, on foot, for one thousand quilometers. Ana fights bravely, encouraging the soldiers, caring their wounds, or even taking in guns. When her husband dies, on the “Laguna’s Retreat”, she decides to carry her husband body on her own arms to be buried in Brazil. Even on that miserable and starving situation, Ana doesn’t give up, and, meeting a injuried lieutenant abandoned to death, decides to carry him too. So, she carries her husband’s body by four hundred meters, lay him on the ground, walk back and picks up the injuried lieutenant, which means walk three times that distance (going, backing and then, going again). She burries her husband in Brazilian territory, when she has no longer strengths to carry on.
